HARRINGTON FORESHORE STAGE DEVELOPMENT
by Bill Burges ( former District Governor )
Harrington Lions, for many years have conducted Carols By Candlelight on the foreshore on a Sunday night just before Christmas. As the stage, a truck loaned by a Coopernook owner, Alan Ashcroft, had been used until only recently when Council demanded that a properly constructed and approved stage was necessary. Lions hired such a stage at a cost of over $800 and decided that the foreshore needed something more permanent.
Using a grant provided by local Member Leslie Williams and using a plan that envisaged a stage with a bow and stern, resembling a ship, in line with Harrington’s history as a shipbuilding port, we sought Council’s approval and their suggestion as to the best place for the stage. All was decided and the materials ordered when the project was halted by a higher echelon of Council that was developing a foreshore plan for the reserve.
The final concept was the stage we have today, constructed in 2015 by Lions and members of the Harrington Men’s Shed. Council provided the stone wall to resemble part of the breakwater and laid power lines so that amplified music could be provided.
